SUMMARY:Online learning event: Demystifying Low Literacy
DESCRIPTION:(presented by Literacy Unlimited / Family Life Centre)\nFebruary 27\, 1:30 to 2:30 pm \nPlease advertise this free info session far and wide! It’s for church staff\, clergy\, lay leaders\, volunteers and\, in fact\, anyone! Please feel free to share it with any organizations with whom your church partners. The session is on Zoom to be easily accessible to all\, and it’s free. \nWhen I met with Literacy Unlimited to plan this\, I was astounded to learn that people who do not read or write well avoid any situation where they might feel `less than’ — and that there are simple ways we\, as churches\, can be more equitable and welcoming. It was eye-opening. \nEveryone knows someone who lives with low literacy — even if they keep it well hidden. Anything we can do in our church programmes\, activities\, worship and communications to make them feel comfortable is a worthwhile investment of time. \n– shared by Elizabeth Chown-Lafrenière\, Family Life Centre  \nDownload poster: 2024-02-27 Demystifying Low Literacy-FLC\nLearn more / register: familylifecentre@gmail.com

SUMMARY:ICHRP Canada National Conference: Resist State Terror\, stand for People’s Rights in the Philippines
DESCRIPTION:Get ready for an electrifying event as Beaconsfield Initiative\, a grassroots movement of the progressive United Church of Canada and ICHRP-Canada\, proudly announce their National Conference: Resist State Terror\, stand for People’s Rights in the Philippines at St Columba House\, 2365 Grand Trunk Street\, in the vibrant city of Montréal\, Québec\, from May 3-5\, 2024! \nPrepare for a ground-breaking gathering where human rights activists and believers from every corner of Canada unite to delve into the crucial connection between human rights in Canada and the Philippines. Our mission? To arm organizations\, National Church institutions\, and individuals with the resources needed to amplify our collective voice for human rights. \nHuman rights abuses don’t recognize borders\, and Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy\, including bolstering military ties with nations like the Philippines\, is a red flag; with Canada’s recent pact on security cooperation\, complicity in the Philippines’ human rights quagmire looms larger. \nBut that’s not all. Canadian corporations’ involvement in labour exploitation and resource plundering is exacerbating the Philippine crisis\, hitting the most vulnerable hardest. The numbers are chilling—799 political prisoners\, hundreds of extrajudicial killings\, attacks against HR activists\, Church People\, and journalists —the world is taking notice of the increasingly constricted democratic space\, the Philippine State using the justice system as a tool to target leftist activist groups. \nBut fear not! Our conference isn’t just about talk; it’s action-packed with riveting panel discussions\, skill-boosting workshops\, and star-studded keynotes featuring luminaries like former congressman Attorney Neri Colmenares\, the tireless human rights crusader\, and Amirah Lidasan\, the dynamic co-chair of Sandugo – Movement of Moro and Indigenous Peoples for Self-Determination. \nAnd the excitement doesn’t stop there! Pre-conference (May 2nd)\, including an enthralling colloquium in collaboration with the Université de Montréal\, under the leadership of the eminent professor Dr Dominique Caouette\, Ph. D. in Government\, set the stage for a whirlwind of inspiration. \nICHRP Canada is part of a global movement striving for justice in the Philippines. Join us in our mission to champion peace and justice while spotlighting the Philippines’ human rights travails. \nLet’s not just talk the talk; let’s walk it together. Join us as we raise our voices in solidarity for justice and freedom for all! \nPlease contact Patricia Lisson (Rev. Dr.) at 514-241-9036 if you need information. \nSee you in Beautiful Montréal!!! \nRegistration Link: ichrpcanada.org/register

SUMMARY:Sunday School Share and Swap (First Third Ministries)
DESCRIPTION:We put Sunday School in the title\, because it allowed us to make a fun alliteration\, but this is for all your congregational children ministry\, whether or not you have a formal Sunday School. \nThe idea is simple: come on a zoom meeting at lunch time on Wednesday June 12th and share and swap ideas about lectionary-based children friendly church experiences for the season of creation. It can be a Sunday School lesson\, a story for worship\, a craft\, a game\, you name it! \nThe goal is to better equip ministers\, lay staff\, and volunteers with creative ideas to minister to the children in our communities of faith. \nThis project is still in the development stage. We are hoping to have a session like this for every liturgical season and develop an accessible regional resource for children ministry. \nNo registration needed: just show up with an open mind and a willingness to share. \nJoin Zoom Meeting: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/81254484699 \nMeeting ID: 812 5448 4699

SUMMARY:Memorial for 70th Anniversary of Tragic Drowning at Cap St-Jacques - Community memorial
DESCRIPTION:On July 13\, 1954\, twelve children from the Negro Community Center tragically drowned in a boating accident near Île Bizard. This year marks the 70th anniversary of this heartbreaking event\, and plans are underway to honour the memory of these young lives lost. \nThe children took part in a summer outing organized by the Negro Community Centre in Little Burgundy and were involved in one of the deadliest boating accidents in Canadian history. This tragedy not only devastated families but also brought to light significant issues regarding water safety and systemic challenges faced by many from marginalized communities. \nHistorical Context and Impact \nThe tragedy in 1954 profoundly impacted Montreal’s Black community and highlighted the urgent need for improved water safety and equitable access to safety resources. Although immediate changes in boating safety regulations were limited\, the incident played a crucial role in the gradual development of more stringent safety standards in Canada. \nCommemorative Events and Memorial Installation \nTo ensure that this event is remembered and that the lessons learned continue to resonate\, a series of activities are being organized to commemorate the 70th anniversary. \nA memorial service will be held at the site of the tragedy on July 13\, 2024. This event will provide a space for community reflection and remembrance. Grief counselors will be available to offer support to the community. They will be at the memorial and are available as needed moving forward. \nAs is tradition\, a memorial service will be held on July 14\, 2024\, at Union United Church. The service will honour the memory of the children and provide a space for the community to come together in prayer and support. We will also celebrate the youth of today by recognizing the winners of the 2024 Rev. Dr. Charles H. Este Scholarship Awards during the service. \nAll members of the Montreal community are invited to participate in these commemorative events. Friends and relatives of the families affected are especially invited to join these activities. Your presence is welcome\, and support is available as needed. \nRemembering the Victims \nThis memorial is not just about remembering a tragic event but also about acknowledging the resilience of a community and the ongoing fight for safety and equality. Let us come together to support one another and ensure that the legacies of Denzil Alleyne\, Margo and Marilyn Fonseca\, Brenda Kelly\, Carol and Alan Leek\, Paula Millington\, Leon Nealey\, Edwin and Diane Springer\, Doreen Walton\, and Estelle Walton are never forgotten. \nJuly 13 and 14 Event Details \nThe community memorial will take place on July 13\, 2024\, at 2 p.m. at Bois-de-L’Île-Bizard Nature Park\, located at 2115 Chem. du Bord-du-Lac\, L’Île-Bizard-Sainte-Geneviève\, QC H9C 1P3. \nThe following day\, July 14\, the special Sunday service will be held at 10 a.m. at Union United Church\, 3007 Rue Delisle\, Montreal\, Quebec H4C 1M8.
