This year we celebrate the 20th anniversary of our legal clinic Just Solutions. And to underline that important milestone, we will be hosting a celebration in April – stay tuned for the date! – and a communications campaign to raise awareness within the larger community of the important work carried out by the clinic team on a daily basis.
En effet, depuis 20 ans l’équipe dévouée d’employés, stagiaires et bénévoles a aidé des milliers de personnes à régulariser leur statut d’immigration, se réunir avec leurs familles et commencer une nouvelle vie en toute sécurité.

Pedagogie

Depuis sa fondation, la Clinique Solutions justes a joué un rôle de pédagogue, offrant des stages principalement aux étudiants en droit et en travail social. Cette mission pédagogique comprend également des présentations dans les universités et cegeps.

En janvier, l’avocat superviseur de la MCM, Rick Goldman, a participé à un panel pour tout(es) les étudiant(e)s de droit du premier cycle à McGill avec la thème : “Trauma-Informed Lawyering”. Rick a parlé de son travail auprès des migrants vulnérables tandis que d’autres panélistes ont expliqué les enjeux du travail juridique avec les autochtones, les aînés, les jeunes à risque et les victimes d’accident.

Dr. Goldman was awarded an honorary doctorate in 2012 by the United Theological College for his tireless work and lifelong vocation in the service of refugees and vulnerable migrants. We are so blessed to have him on our team!

And for a second year in a row, MCM staffer Peter Butler hosted a group of about 25 McGill law students for a more in-depth discussion about the work we do at the Just Solutions Legal Clinic, and how that work has changed over the past year due to new restrictions on the right to claim asylum at the Canada-U.S. border. Some of the students expressed interest in working with refugees and vulnerable migrants in the future. Sensitizing future lawyers about our work not only raises general awareness but can even change career paths! Peter is another invaluable team member at MCM.

Networking-Réseautage

Thanks to the initiative of new MCM staffers Anthony Rouget and Marta Pereira de la Infanta, a meeting was recently organized of all the legal players involved in humanitarian immigration to ensure better communication and a more coordinated response.

L’objectif de cette première rencontre est de faire une cartographie des différents acteurs et leurs spécialités, publics cibles etc. Ensuite, nous espérons garder ce socle d’organisation pour travailler en collaboration sur des points plus précis et particuliers pour répondre à nos différentes problématiques.

MCM Elder-in-Residence / Aîné Ambassadeur

En janvier nous avons célébré l’anniversaire du doyen de nos ainés ambassadeurs – Robert Verrall – qui a soufflé ses 96 bougies!

At 96 years young, Robert continues to inspire us with his wisdom, caring, and warm presence at all of our events – keeping our community open, inclusive and spirit-filled.

Oidhche Bhlas Burns! Happy Burns Night!

And a happy night it was! Having received a grant from the St. Andrew’s Society in 2023 for our work with seniors, we were invited to celebrate the famous Scottish bard Robbert Burns, along with other community representatives, at the annual Burns Night Supper. Piping in – toasting – stabbing – and eating the Haggis was quite the cultural experience!
