For International Women’s Rights Day on March 8th, we highlighted a reality that is often overlooked: the challenges faced by migrant women in Quebec: double discrimination: those linked to their gender and those linked to their migratory status, which is often precarious and dependent on their family or marital situation.
Dependent status, such as sponsorship, make migrant women more vulnerable to abuse and domestic and gender violence. Unfortunately, this is a reality we witness on a daily basis.
MCM staffers joined hundreds of others, including First Nations women and those from diverse cultural communities, on Friday evening at Square Dorchester in downtown Montreal for the annual March 8th rally and march.

Une réalité souvent méconnue sont les défis auxquels font face les femmes migrantes au Québec, qui représentent une majorité des personnes avec lesquelles la MCM travaille.
En tant que femmes migrantes, elles font face à une double discrimination : celle liée à leur genre et celle liée à leur statut migratoire, souvent précaire et dépendant de leur situation familiale ou conjugale.
Les statuts à dépendance, comme le parrainage, rendent les femmes migrantes plus vulnérables aux abus et à la violence conjugale et familiale. Malheureusement, c’est une réalité dont nous sommes témoin.e.s au quotidien.
Just Solutions Legal Clinic: As we prepare to celebrate the 20th anniversary of JS in May, we were thrilled to receive approval of a new 2 year grant that will allow us to expand our work with migrants whose main language of communication in Canada is English.
Danaides Pilot Project / Diversity without Discrimination: This new initiative promoting access to justice for vulnerable migrants is making progress: our research protocol just passed the Ethics Board of l’Université de Montréal, and our public awareness campaign will be rolled out in the city of Sherbrooke this spring.
